Learning a whole new program, design rules, and just overall how to design can be hard enough on its own. Let alone traveling 5 hours away from home to work with new people to figure out just how to make the best book possible. The echo 2017 yearbook was Blanc Slate which meant we had a lot to learn about design wise. I took on the role of taking notes and working with advisors to figure out just how we would do as many doodles as we could dream of. This meant that I would later have to teach other designers how these doodles can be created.

Honestly one of the hardest things to design can be weekly's, it is all collages, and all about makes okay things look cool. This was one of my favorite weekly's I've designed. I love the little pops of color, and the large photos with a lot of stories being told at the same time.
Working with theme ideas, including the word thing. "We Know a Thing or Two Because We've Seen a Thing or Two," is my favorite feature page of this years book. Using pictures and text design to display the theme of the page.
It can't all be good, some times you have to fail in order to keep moving forward. That is what I wanted to focus on in this mini mag. Weeks we talked about this being a trigger warning page. However, I fought for it not to have one. I think the picture sets the mood. These stories are real, the people are real, and mental health is something not to be afraid of.

some of my biggest and best design projects
blanc slate mental health mini mag
At the beginning of the year in 2017, our head designers gave out tasks, I myself was told to come up with an idea for the mini mag. Little did I know I would end up designing the whole thing. It was at a MIPA workshop that I figured out I wanted to cover mental health. When I told the over editors they all looked at me like I was crazy, but they told me they would help and support
me along the way. This section lead me to be persons of the week by abc12. They loved that we weren't afraid to tell the hard scary stories. The school loved this section. They loved finding out stories about student they would have never guessed were facing such hard times.
one more thing opening copy
Opening copy, a much harder task than I thought it was going to be. However, in the end I finished. I love how it turned out. So many different layers are used and were continued to be used though out the book. With one of the most coverage the opening at Grand Blanc has had in years, I am proud of each month it took to finish it.
blanc slate winter sports references
With some of the biggest teams designing the winter sports was hard. However, I designed it once and then I designed it again so that we could have more space for the spring sports. Doing references is one of my favorite things to design. It's a challenge. You know what you have and how much space you have to fit it in.
one more thing fall sports references
The fall sports reference is was 3 spreads designed all around our 3 football teams, with over 200 boys on all three teams, it was a lot of names and big pictures to put on the pages. We also got records back from almost every team which, love the content, made spacing harder and slim to none.
